47RE Transmission Replacements: The Basics

Within each and every vehicle there is a transmission used to transfer the torque from the engine to the wheels. When it comes to transmissions, trucks are notorious for having stronger transmission components because they typically are expected to have excess demands put on them. Likewise, weaker transmissions often appear in smaller cars due to the lessened expected stress. The Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 came with the 47RE transmission and today we are going to discuss the differences between getting a rebuilt or remanufactured 47RE for your transmission replacement. Rebuilt Vs. Remanufactured

The term “rebuilt transmission” refers to a transmission where its broken parts are replaced with new parts to inevitably restore it to a functioning transmission unit once again. With a truck, a good transmission is a requirement if you want to guarantee a safe haul. Essentially, a rebuilt 47RE transmission has some parts that have been replaced to get it back to working order and to make it safe to put on the road again.

The term “remanufactured transmission” is a little different. With a remanufactured transmission, all of the broken parts within the transmission assembly will be replaced with new or re-machined components as well as all of the other parts. A remanufactured transmission requires additional machining used to make sure that the transmission is in good shape. This could be work on the inside of the transmission to reshape or to repair damage, or it can be doing more machine work to make sure that the gears fit and move properly. All in all, a remanufactured 47RE transmission would be a more reliable option.

Which is Better?

There is no real method to figure out what is right and which is going to work best. With a used transmission, it really does depend on what is available and what is going to work for you and your vehicle. If your 47RE transmission needs to be replaced, it is always going to be a matter of what you can get and what is going to work for your vehicle.

If you have the money, a new transmission is a good choice, if you want to save some money and still get a great transmission, a remanufactured option may be what you are looking for. However, when looking strictly for the cheapest transmission replacement option, a rebuilt transmission is going to be your best bet. Above everything else, rebuilt and remanufactured 47RE options also help to get those parts out of the junkyard and out of the scrap yard. At the end of the day, I personally believe that the best transmission replacement option for a 47RE transmission is a remanufactured one. A remanufactured transmission is nearly as reliable as a new transmission yet is much cheaper.
